Bend, Oregon: A Haven for Inclusive Outdoor Adventure

Embracing Accessibility and Community in the Heart of the Pacific Northwest

Bend, Oregon, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant outdoor culture.

For individuals with disabilities, the city is making significant strides to ensure that outdoor adventures are accessible to all.

One notable initiative is the development of the AdvenChair, an all-terrain wheelchair designed by local innovator Geoff Babb.

After experiencing a stroke in 2005 that limited his mobility, Babb was determined to continue exploring the outdoors.

His creation, the AdvenChair, has opened up trails and natural wonders to those who might have previously found them inaccessible.

Organizations like Wanderlust Tours have embraced this innovation, offering guided excursions that utilize the AdvenChair, allowing participants to experience the rugged beauty of areas like Smith Rock State Park.

In addition to adaptive equipment, Bend's commitment to inclusivity is evident in its community projects.

The Bend Park and Recreation District has initiated improvements at Miller's Landing Park to enhance river access for individuals of all abilities.

These enhancements include accessible transfer benches, ramps, and shaded areas for swimming and wading, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the Deschutes River.

Local businesses are also contributing to this inclusive atmosphere.

BlackStrap Industries Inc., a Bend-based outdoor gear manufacturer, is developing a new campus in the Larkspur neighborhood.

Scheduled for completion in 2025, this facility aims to serve as a hub for the outdoor community, fostering collaboration and accessibility.

The campus will feature an outdoor event space designed to host community events and fundraisers, further strengthening the bonds within Bend's outdoor enthusiasts.

Community support extends to affordable housing initiatives as well.

Thistle & Nest, a nonprofit organization, has been awarded over $10 million to construct 74 affordable homes off SW Murphy Road.

This project, known as Ponderosa Commons, aims to provide energy-efficient housing options, ensuring that individuals and families can reside in Bend without financial strain.

These developments reflect Bend's dedication to creating an environment where everyone, regardless of physical ability or economic status, can participate in and enjoy the city's rich outdoor offerings.

As Bend continues to grow, its commitment to inclusivity and community engagement sets a precedent for other cities aiming to make outdoor adventures accessible to all.
